چکیده

The Generic Enterprise Ensemble (GEE) developed by the COTS-Based Systems initiative at the Software Engineering Institute is designed to be a generic approach to building Enterprise Information systems that are distributed, transaction-based and secure. Two GEE variants were developed: one by integrating “latest and greatest” components from leading vendors and one using Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB). Where the development of this system has proven impossible using “latest and greatest” components, initial indications are that an EJB solution is relatively straightforward. Our experiences have implications for third-party integrators.

Defensive Approaches to Testing Systems that Contain COTS and Third-Party Functionality

Most systems today are composed of hardware components, COTS software, and custom software. When a system fails, a confusing and complex liability problem ensues for all parties that have contributed software and hardware functionality to the composite system. This paper presents a consumer-oriented methodology for predicting what impact on system quality a particular Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (...

The Vendor and User Organizations Characteristics for COTS Software Evaluation and Selection

Since the Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software become widespread components in the market for building the systems with less time and cost, the COTS evaluation and selection becomes a non-trivial task. There are many models attempted to propose a set of characteristics for evaluating and selecting COTS software. However, these models have concentrated on the functional and quality character...

Position Paper for the International Workshop on Reuse Economics, Austin, Texas 4.16.2002 COTS-based Systems and Make vs. Buy Decisions: the Emerging Picture

The conventional rationale for using COTS (commercial off-theshelf) components is that the more a software system is built from COTS products, the lower the cost of initial development. Less understood is that during the long term sustainment phase—from deployment through retirement—the cost of maintenance of a COTS-based system (CBS) generally increases as the number of COTS products used incr...

The Dimensions of Embedded COTS and OSS Software Component Integration

This paper describes the dimensions of the integration of embedded Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) and Open Source Software (OSS) components in the telecommunication systems. The paper emphasizes a telecommunications system vendor view to COTS and OSS component integration. The paper is based on semi-structured interviews held both at component supplying and integrating companies in Finland. Th...

COTS Component Evaluation and the Internet

Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software component is developed by a commercial vendor and is sold “as is”. There is no single, accepted definition for a COTS software component. Here, we assume the COTS software component of coarse granularity (often referred to as ‘software package’) which is self-contained, independent, and with a “significant aggregate functionality and complexity” (Brown 1...
